How to choose a body shop for your aftermarket bumper

A new bumper looks only as good as the shop that fits and paints it. Here is what to ask before you hand over your car and your parts.

1. Test fit before paint

Ask the shop to mount the bumper unpainted first and check the gaps around the headlights, fenders and hood. Painted parts can't be returned, so any fitment question needs to come up before paint.

2. Ask about prep work

Aftermarket parts usually need light sanding, trimming and primer. A good shop will tell you up front how many hours of prep they expect.

3. Check their color matching

Ask for photos of past jobs on cars with your paint color, especially pearl and metallic finishes.

4. Keep your hardware

Make sure the shop keeps your clips, sensors and brackets so everything transfers to the new bumper.
